Cleanup and debris removal work begins after storm;  thousands without power

Downed trees and power lines, trash and other debris were littered on several roads in the area due to severe storms Monday night in the region.

So far, several neighborhoods are still without electricity service and it is expected that as the work is carried out, this period will be extended to two days.

These are the subscribers, according to the energy company, affected at the moment:

PECO (total of 33,501 affected)

  • Chester County: 21,163
  • Delaware County: 6,403
  • Montgomery County: 4,008
  • Philadelphia County: 1,497

Delmarva Power (total 6,258 affected)

  • Kent County: 0
  • New Castle County: 6,215
  • Sussex County: 43

PPL (total of 18,885 affected)

  • Bucks County: 3,605
  • Chester Count: 100
  • Lehigh County: 10,210
  • Montgomery County: 213
  • Northampton County: 4,757

It should be noted that most of the breakdowns were registered in Pennsylvania, more than in New Jersey and Delaware.

Bands of severe thunderstorms fanned out across the region from 4:00 pm until late at night, at 10:30 pm A First Warning was issued due to the potential risk of damaging winds, hail, and the possibility of a tornado. In fact, a tornado watch was issued until 10:00 p.m. in the area and two consequent advisories were issued in parts of Pennsylvania.

Flights at Philadelphia International Airport were halted for a period of time, while bad weather passed, until operations could resume.
