José Pérez, one of the coaches of the Cuban children’s team that participated in the Little League World Series, took advantage of the unique opportunity that this trip meant and stayed in the United States.
Pérez left the complex where the contestants are staying, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on Saturday night, according to the NorthCentral.PA portal.
The organizers of the event confirmed the news and said in a statement that they would continue to provide the best support to the Bayamo team, representative of Cuba.
The Cuban team has already finished its performance in Williamsport, after losing 3-2 against Panama on Sunday.
In 2021, the Cuban Baseball Federation signed an agreement to insert itself into the little league competition system, an organization that has existed since 1947, although this was the first participation of the Greater Antilles.
Until that year, 16 teams competed in the World Series, eight from the United States and eight from the rest of the world, divided by geographical area.
But last year the number of participants was expanded to 20 and Puerto Rico, Panama and Cuba were added, in a rotation in which each zone receives an automatic ticket to a team in the tournament two out of three years.
In 2024, Cubans and Puerto Ricans will be back in Williamsport by direct ticket, while the Panamanians, who were also there last year, must seek their qualification in the Caribbean regional contest.
