Cofepris warns about false master's degrees in cosmetic surgery

MEXICO CITY (appro).- The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) detected false master’s degrees in cosmetic surgery and longevity offered by the Institute of Higher Studies in Medicine and the Universidad del Conde, both located in the state of Veracruz .

Together with the General Directorate of Quality and Health Education (DGCES), it identified that medical personnel graduated from said academic centers are involved in various cases of patients who have suffered serious damage to health and even death within private hospitals in different entities. of the country, because they perform plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery procedures without having the certification established by current health legislation.

“To carry out this type of surgical procedures, the specialist person must be a graduate of officially recognized health institutions, and accredit before the National Regulatory Committee of Medical Specialty Councils (Conacem) their training, abilities, skills and expertise to obtain the certification and corresponding recertification,” the health authority reported in a statement.

Therefore, he recommended that the population intending to undergo an aesthetic or reconstructive plastic surgery procedure, ensure that the establishment has a current health license issued by Cofepris to perform surgical acts and must be in public view.

Requirements of doctors who can practice these surgeries

Cofepris listed the requirements that medical personnel must have in order to perform this type of surgery,

-Must be graduated from officially recognized health institutions

-Accredit before the National Regulatory Committee of Medical Specialty Councils (Conacem) their training, abilities, skills and expertise to obtain the corresponding certification and recertification.

-Any specialty in the field of medicine corresponds to and is equivalent to postgraduate studies, which are generally carried out in hospitals or clinics in the Health sector, through the National Residency System.

-Therefore, Cofepris and DGCES emphasize that the academic degree of master’s degree in cosmetic surgery does not entitle health personnel to perform specialized medical-surgical procedures.
