In Marseille, a week after the explosion of a building on rue de Tivoli which killed eight people, a ceremony was held on Sunday April 16 at the end of the morning, to pay tribute to the victims.

Eight long minutes of silence on Sunday morning April 16 in this district of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), in memory of the eight people who died a week ago, then a round of applause. “You have to be there to pay tribute to those who left and did not have the chance to say goodbye to their families”, said a resident. A rally organized on the initiative of an association born after the collapse of the buildings on rue d’Aubagne in 2018.

Over 300 residents evacuated

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, an explosion wakes up an entire neighborhood. On the spot, rue de Tivoli, the firefighters discovered a pile of concrete, more than 1,000 m3 of rubble. Several buildings down, days of searching, but no survivors. Eight bodies are finally pulled out of the rubble. The judicial investigation continues. The preferred hypothesis is that of a gas leak, the origin of which now remains to be determined. In total, in the sector, 42 buildings and more than 300 inhabitants were evacuated. Residents who do not yet know when they will be able to return home.
