Renewable energies in Colombia have one of the highest shares in the OECD.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has updated the renewable energy generation figures. Among the 10 countries that generate the most this type of energy is Colombiawhich would also be the second largest producer of Latin Americaaccording to the scale presented.

The statistics are elaborated evaluating in what proportion these renewable energies are of primary use for the nations. In that sense, the OECD estimates that almost 30% of what is generated is used directly in daily life.

The country that leads this list is Iceland, with 89%, followed by Costa Rica with 52%, Norway third with 51%, Sweden fourth with 46% and Latvia fifth with 43%. Colombia it is ninth registering 29%, surpassing great powers, to name a few: the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.

“Renewable energy is defined as the contribution of renewable energy to the total primary energy supply (TPES). Renewables include the primary energy equivalent of hydroelectric (excluding pumped storage), geothermal, solar, wind, tidal, and wave sources. Also included are energies derived from solid biofuels, biogasoline, biodiesel, other liquid biofuels, biogas and the renewable fraction of municipal waste”, details the OECD.

The figures are mainly reached in Colombia by hydroelectric power stations, followed by solar and wind power plants. These would be the ones that would be promoted with the so-called energy transition, which in addition to being one of the Sustainable Development Goalsis one of the flags of the government of Gustavo Petro.

The energy transition It is one of the axes of transformation of the country, as it was consigned in the national development plan. Precisely the fourth point talks about renewable energies “productive transformation, internationalization and climate action”.

This axis is contained in Article 3, and although it seeks that more and more activities are carried out from green energies, it does not detail how this implementation would be done. What stands out is the expectation that these would have in the national economy:

“Productive transformation, internationalization and climate action. It aims at the diversification of productive activities that take advantage of natural capital and deepen the use of clean energy, that are intensive in knowledge and innovation, that respect and guarantee human rights, and that contribute to building resilience in the face of shocks. climatic. With this, productivity is expected to promote sustainable development and the country’s competitiveness, increasing wealth while being inclusive, progressively leaving behind dependence on extractive activities and giving way to a reindustrialized economy with new sectors supported by the territorial potentialities in harmony with nature”.

According to unions in the energy sector, some articles would have negative effects, mainly on the issue of monetization. In interview with Briefcasethe president of the Renewable Energies Association (SER Colombia), Alexander Luciusconsiders that the articles do not help much with the transition process:

“Despite the fact that within the policies that this Government has proposed for the acceleration of renewable energies in the National Development Plan, there are things that do not align very well with those ideas.”

Guilds consider that the PND It goes against the process to speed up the transition, mainly because the current provision does not encourage investment by companies, in addition to the fact that generation from other mechanisms continues to be cheaper.
