The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, signed, on Tuesday, the decree by which he releases Alexandr Stoianoglo from the position of Prosecutor General, citing the procrastination of the courts in pronouncing a decision in this case, reports News.ro.

“Today, September 26, 2023, the presidential decree was signed for the dismissal of Alexandr Stoianoglo from the position of general prosecutor, based on the CSP decision of May 23, 2022. Given that the pronouncement of a decision by the courts on the legality of the dismissal of Alexandr Stoianoglo by the PSC is delayed, the signing of the decree comes in the context of the recommendations of the European Union to ensure the fulfillment of the position of Prosecutor General and the obligations of the Republic of Moldova to fulfill the conditions of the justice system”, announced, on Tuesday, the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova, in – a press release.

The decree shows that the release from office by the Superior Council of Prosecutors was made after obtaining the qualification “unsatisfactory”.

“Following the examination of the report of the Evaluation Commission of the Prosecutor General (suspended by right from office), Alexandr Stoianoglo, drawn up on May 5, 2022, the Superior Council of Prosecutors, by decision no. 1-92 of May 23, 2022, in accordance with art. 311 para. (8) and para. (9) from Law no. 312016 regarding the Prosecutor’s Office, gave the qualification “unsatisfactory” to the activity carried out by Alexandr Stoianoglo during the exercise of the mandate of the Prosecutor General and proposed to the President of the Republic of Moldova the release of Mr. Alexandr Stoianoglo from the position of Prosecutor General”, the decree states.

Alexandr Stoianoglo was suspended from the position of general prosecutor at the beginning of October 2021, being investigated for passive corruption, false statements, abuse of office and exceeding the duties of office. Later, he was targeted by another criminal case.
