Hamburg – The countdown is running.
Hamburg’s state returning officer must decide by early February at the latest whether to allow the nation’s first popular initiative against gender gaga in Hamburg authorities, universities and schools.
But there is already a lot of support for frontwoman Sabine Mertens (65). Cabaret artist Dieter Nuhr (62, “Nuhr im Erste”) says: “Authorities have to orient themselves to the will of the people in linguistic matters, not the other way around. More and more often, however, gender is being decreed from the top down by the authoritarian state. That’s why I find a referendum on this very sympathetic!”
Mertens is pleased: “Our initiative has the potential to become the largest German citizens’ movement since the fall of the Wall. Language belongs to all of us. The people are taking back the language.”
