Construction worker trapped between buildings in Manhattan after 30-foot fall

NEW YORK — Firefighters rushed to save a construction worker who was pinned between two buildings in the Lower East Side after a terrifying fall, authorities said.

The worker, who has not yet been identified, fell about 30 feet Thursday morning and landed on his back. He then got stuck and was unable to free himself from the very narrow space between the buildings on Broome Street.

Firefighters had to use blades and jackhammers to break through a wall and get the man out.

“It took about a half hour to breach the wall, we made a cut about six feet wide by two feet high. We finally got the worker out through the hole,” FDNY Chief John Leverock said.

The construction worker was injured but awake and speaking during the rescue. He complained of pain in his head.

He was being treated at a local hospital. The status of him was not immediately clear.
