Lima, May 8 (EFE).- The Peruvian Foreign Ministry reported on Monday that its general consulate in Mexico is in contact with the 12 Peruvians who were kidnapped near the border of that country with the United States to guarantee their “prompt and safe return ” to the Andean nation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the Consulate General of Peru in Mexico “is in contact with the 12 compatriots who made up the group of more than 100 foreign migrants released,” after being held captive in the city of San Luis Río Colorado, near the border between Mexico and the United States.

“Our Consulate General is monitoring this case in order to guarantee the prompt and safe return of our compatriots to Peru,” added the Foreign Ministry on its Twitter account.

Mexican authorities reported last Saturday that they had located 113 migrants from 13 countries in Latin America and Asia, who were deprived of their liberty in a safe house in the city of San Luis Río Colorado.

In addition, five people were arrested at the location for their probable responsibility in the crimes of illegal deprivation of liberty and extortion to the detriment of migrants and their families.

In a statement, the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office reported that, derived from the investigation into the kidnapping of 10 members of a family of migrants from Colombia, denounced on Friday, security and ministerial agencies managed to locate the 113 migrants. .

Among the kidnapped migrants were children, women and men, from countries such as Ecuador (29), Colombia (12), Brazil (12), Peru (12), El Salvador (11), Cuba (8), Honduras (7) and Dominican Republic (4).

In addition, migrants from Afghanistan (7), India (6), Nepal (2), Bangladesh (1), as well as the United States (2).

The Justice Prosecutor’s Office reported that the victims, upon seeing the presence of police, military and National Guard agents, were happy and applauded their intervention, in addition to praying religious prayers.

The hostages were confined against their will in a house in the El Mezquite neighborhood (neighborhood), in San Luis Río Colorado, where they had been living for several days and in overcrowded conditions.

The migrants were transferred to the Municipal Police Academy, where they received medical attention and accompaniment.

On Friday, authorities reported that 10 migrants from Colombia who were kidnapped in the state of Sonora, when they were about to cross into Arizona, United States, were located and released safely.

San Luis Río Colorado is a city in the state of Sonora, on the border with the United States, a place where thousands of migrants arrive throughout the year seeking to cross illegally into the states of Arizona or California.
