In the video series, doctor Prof. Weckbecker talks about dying: why doctors find it difficult and why we should deal with it early on.

A million Germans die every year. 58 percent of people want to experience their final hours at home. This is the result of a representative survey by the hospice and palliative care association. However, the reality is different: more than half of the people die in the hospital, around 19 percent in an inpatient care facility – and only 23 percent actually at home. Is it possible to better reconcile the wishes of those affected with reality – and what could a “good death” look like?”

The current episode of our video consultation with Prof. Klaus Weckbecker is about this emotionally sensitive topic: “The Good Death” – a question that is very important to our expert. After all – he explains to us right at the beginning of the program – every doctor has to experience that at some point his options for healing the patient are exhausted. They often find it difficult to accept. But in principle, everyone should think about how they want to die at an early stage.

Prof. Weckbecker holds the chair for general medicine at the University of Witten/Herdecke and as such a proven expert for family medicine topics. Together with him we devote ourselves to the so-called common diseases and everyday medical issues.

In our video we talked about the topics:

  • The patient’s wishes should also be at the top of the list at the end of life: why we should all have filled out a living will and power of attorney – and what needs to be considered.
  • How palliative care works – the care that encases people in their final hours.
  • What the doctor personally thinks of the debate about assisted suicide and euthanasia associations.
  • How to deal with the fear of death.
  • Why you need a friend when dying.
