Consumer confidence falls further in August

The index that measures confidence fell 0.6% compared to July, to settle at 71.2 points, according to the preliminary estimate of the University of Michigan published this Friday.

The estimate, however, exceeds the expectations of analysts, who anticipated a sharper drop in the index to 70.9 points, according to the consensus published by the specialized site briefing.com.

The annual increase of the index, of 22.3%, in any case continues to be significant.

“Consumer confidence has changed little since July and is now 42% above the record low seen in June 2022, and close to its all-time average of 86,” said survey director Joanne Hsu, quoted in the press release.

Consumer expectations on the inflation front remain well below what the Biden administration talks about high prices, which remain very high.
