Consumer confidence in the US plummets

The Conference Board business institute’s index that measures Americans’ confidence in their economy stood at 97 points, according to the survey published this Tuesday, compared to 103.1 points in March, a figure revised downwards.

Analysts expected 103.5 points according to the Market Watch consensus.

“Consumers remain less optimistic about the current situation of the economy and are more concerned about the future conditions of labor activity, job availability and income,” summarized Dana Peterson, chief economist of the Conference Board, quoted in a statement.

In any case, “a slight optimism somewhat offsets the great concerns that exist today in the United States,” he said.

Inflation and high prices “particularly for food and gasoline, dominate consumer concerns” while “politics and global conflicts come second,” Peterson added.
