More than 11 million tons of food end up in the garbage in Germany every year. A quantity that many cannot actually imagine. For classification: An Opel Corsa weighs almost 980 kilograms, a little less than a ton. More than eleven million Opel Corsas of food waste is far too much. And that while many people cannot even afford three meals a day. Germany, sometimes you are really impossible!

Of course, private household waste has the lion’s share here. Food that is thrown away includes things that have gone bad, as well as coffee grounds, fruit and nut shells, and bones. But – especially in the garbage cans of supermarkets – there is also a lot of fresh food that could still be eaten. The emphasis is on could. Because it is FORBIDDEN to save this food.
