More than 27,882 hectares burned during the month of January in the province of Corrientes as a consequence of the forest fires that plague the province, the Emergency Operations Command (COE) reported today that in the last hours 17 fire sources were registered, in the within the framework of a situation declared critical by the agency and which is consistent with a diagnosis made by INTA which indicates that in February there were already 234 sources of heat.

The Iberá Wetlands are currently affected by two fire sources, one of which has been active for more than 50 days, official sources reported. Also in a neighboring area, in San Miguel, there are two other fire incidents, as in General Paz and Curuzú Cuatiá, while in La Cruz there are three. In the areas of Santa Rosa, San Carlos, San Luis del Palmar, Mburucuyá, Sauce and Esquina, in the south of the province, rural fires were verified.

The National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) released a report indicating that in one week of February there were 234 sources of heat, while in all of January there had been 641.

The agency reported that only in January the area affected by the fires in the province of Corrientes amounted to 27,882 hectares, mostly wetlands, they detailed. The figure can even rise due to the drought that plagues the country, the lack of rainfall and the high temperatures that favor the spread of the flames. For this week, maximum temperatures of 40 degrees are expected on average.
