Losing weight can be challenging and hard work for some. The fact is, there are no shortcuts. However, comparing and counting food calories is not the safest and most effective method of losing weight.

“I’ve seen absurd cases, in which people compare a healthy dish to a fast-food snack, but the truth is that our metabolism is much more complex than a mathematical calculation”, says nutritionist Talyta Machado.

She reckons that the focus on calories is a giant camouflage, which diverts attention from the quality of food.

Calorie counting should not be the first focus. It’s not just values that count for weight loss. Talyta explains that by restricting food consumption, adaptive thermogenesis can happen, which is when the resting metabolism decreases beyond what is expected, making it difficult to lose weight.

“The body is smart and realizes when we stop ingesting calories. It’s been a feature since caveman times, when he needed to adapt, since he didn’t have food available like today. Then, the metabolism enters the plateau effect, which is the stagnation of weight during the weight loss process”, says the doctor.

Before picking up the calculator, she suggests de-inflaming the body with food, such as fruits, grains and vegetables. Changing habits, such as sleeping and exercising, are also important in the weight loss process.

Talyta claims that the human body was made to exercise. Therefore, it is not healthy to be sedentary. If the intestine is inflamed, it may absorb more calories than it is believed to be eating.

Just looking at numbers, according to the nutritionist, leads people to eat more junk food. “They will end up eating a brigadeiro instead of a fruit”, laments the nutritionist. She adds that, in some cases, the individual becomes paranoid, but it is better to eat with quality to ensure good digestion.

Talyta considers that, with the diet already established, if the reason is aesthetic, or if the patient is an athlete, counting calories helps. “But it shouldn’t be the foreground,” he recalls.

She also points out that you can’t bet all the chips on a food just to deflate the body. It is a set of foods, a diet rich in vegetables (fruits and vegetables), to achieve the goal.
