Boxeadora cubana hace historia.

Legnis Calá makes history by becoming the first Cuban boxer to debut in an international competition. The Havana boxer said that “it is a strong sport, but it is possible.”

The Island, a historic world power in men’s boxing, only made the practice of this sport official a year ago, after six decades of prohibition.

Calá was part of the selection of six Cuban women who entered a ring for the first time in an international competition, at the fifth ALBA Games in Venezuela in April of this year, where she won the bronze medal.

This served as a prelude to the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador where he surprised with a silver medal, and then with his advancement he reached the quarterfinals in the Pan American Games held in Santiago, Chile, although he did not obtain a medal here. .

La Zurda expressed what she is experiencing since her training in the gym of the Pan American stadium in the Cuban capital.

“We did not think that we were going to have any athletes in an international event and that they could count on women’s boxing in international events. With the progress I have had in boxing and the results, everyone supports me a lot,” he added.

His setback in Chile left him out of the Olympic qualification, so Calá is now working to achieve one of the four tickets reserved for the Americas region.

Getting to Paris 2024 “would be completing a dream,” said the boxer, who must first prepare for the pre-Olympic events scheduled between the end of the year and the beginning of 2024.
