Cuban paratrooper dies in accident during training

MIAMI, United States. – Parachutist Miladis Ríos Góngora, 51, lost her life in an accident during practice at the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Airport, in Bayamo, Granma. The tragedy occurred this Tuesday, during the first scheduled jump attempt of the day.

Luis Mario Araujo Moreno, instructor and president of the province’s Air Sports Federation, shared with the radio station Radio Ciudad Monumento that Ríos Góngora was one of the most capable skydivers of the Skydiving Club, with an impressive record of more than 400 jumps.

He also clarified that a commission has been formed to investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate event, while some initial reports suggest that the parachute did not deploy properly. The investigations are focused on identifying the exact causes of the accident and establishing protocols to avoid similar tragedies in the future.

Ríos Góngora, in addition to her outstanding sports career, worked as a professor at the University of Granma and had training in Physical Culture and Sports. The community, shocked by her loss, gathered this Wednesday to pay tribute to her at the local cemetery.
