The 82-year-old still has to rest after an operation on her back. But she has already made a first public appointment.
Fredensborg – The Danish Queen Margrethe II appeared in public for the first time after her back operation in February on Wednesday evening. At the royal palace in Fredensborg – about 40 kilometers north of Copenhagen – the residents of the city greeted the monarch with a torchlight procession.
“It’s nice to be back,” the Queen said, according to Billed-Bladet magazine. “I’ve been looking forward to being back all winter and now I’m here. And spring is coming.” Margrethe II usually spends spring in Fredensborg. The Danes traditionally celebrate their arrival there with the torchlight procession.
After the operation on her back, the queen is still in rehabilitation. Just in time for her 83rd birthday on Sunday, she wants to resume at least part of her work. On that day she wants to show herself to her compatriots with her family on the balcony of her Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. After that, according to the court, there will still be some larger tasks that the queen cannot take on. dpa
