With the purpose of guaranteeing Salvadorans their right to vote in the 2024 elections, the new Legislative Assembly endorsed, with 65 votes, transitory provisions to extend the term to change the address in the Single Identity Document (DUI).

In accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Code, the period for voters to make said change expires on February 3, but with the approved decree the term will be extended until April 3 of this year.

The parliamentarians explained that this measure aims to have greater citizen participation in the elections in which the President and Vice President of the Republic will be chosen, as well as deputies of the Legislative Assembly, the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) and municipal councils.

“This day, we are extending the deadline for Salvadorans to change their home address and not be left without voting in the next elections. Now, they will be able to make the respective modifications in the DUI”, said the parliamentarian of New Ideas, Walter Alemán.

For her part, parliamentarian Ana Figueroa said that Salvadorans will be able to update the required information in the next two months.

While legislator Rebeca Santos stated that the approved provision guarantees freedom and the right to vote.

“We are guaranteeing that the right to vote is comprehensive. We know that the opposition will never support these types of initiatives. The term will be extended without affecting the electoral calendar”, Santos expressed.
