Here’s everything you need to know about Father’s Day 2023.

WHEN IS FATHER’S DAY CELEBRATED IN 2023?

This year, Father’s Day in the United States and in many countries around the world is celebrated on Sunday, June 18. Therefore, it is your time to plan something special.

However, not all countries celebrate that day.

In Honduras, Father’s Day was declared on March 19 under the legislative agreement 13 that was decreed during the government of the politician and doctor, Ramón Villeda Morales, according to The Press.

The celebration itself comes from religion, since the date coincides with the festival of Saint Joseph, who was the husband of the Virgin Mary and the father figure (adoptive father) of Jesus, according to data from La Prensa.

The newspaper indicates that there is a possibility that this is the reason why other countries such as Italy, Portugal, Spain, Bolivia and Uruguay celebrate the holiday on the same day, this being the date of March 19.

HOW DID THE CELEBRATION OF PARENTS DAY BEGIN?

The celebration dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. After her mother died in childbirth, Sonora Smart Dodd and her siblings were raised by her father, a Civil War veteran named William Smart.

As Dodd wrote in a 1910 newspaper article, to show his gratitude to his father, Dodd initiated a day to “instill the same love and reverence for the father as the mother’s part.”

The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19 of that same year, as Dodd chose the date based on the month of the father’s birthday.

In the years that followed, various presidents such as Calvin Coolidge and Lyndon B. Johnson commemorated the day, but it wasn’t until President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation in 1972 that Father’s Day became an official American holiday.
