DeSantis leaves the door open to a hypothetical pardon for Trump if he is convicted and he is proclaimed president of the United States

MADRID, 28 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The governor of Florida and candidate for the Republican primaries, Ron DeSantis, has indicated that, if he is elected president of the United States and the Justice finally condemns the former president and also a Republican candidate, Donald Trump, he would probably pardon him.

“I will do the right thing for the country. I don’t think it’s good for the country that a former president of almost 80 years goes to prison. It doesn’t seem like it’s a good thing,” DeSantis said during an interview on a podcast and collected by the portal of The Hill news.

DeSantis has compared this hypothetical situation with what happened in the late 1970s, when President Gerald Ford pardoned his predecessor, Richard Nixon, for the ‘Watergate’ case, a political document theft scandal.

According to the governor of Florida, Ford’s decision caused unrest among society and the political opposition, however it allowed the country to move forward. “The country wants a fresh start,” DeSantis said.

These statements by DeSantis, Trump’s main rival to lead the Republican aspirations to the White House, come at a time when the former president could face additional charges for his role in the assault on the Capitol in January 2021.

In addition, Trump has several other cases open, including an alleged case of bribery of adult film actress Stormy Daniels and another for the deliberate retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida.
