Detection of Alzheimer's getting closer

A protein that builds up in the brain gives clues to the development of Alzheimer’s disease… and now, a new study says it can be detected with a blood test instead of expensive brain analysis methods, which could help it be more accessible to the mass public.

A blood test that shows positive results for the p-tau protein can indicate the potential for the disease even before the patient develops symptoms.

Currently, the only way to find that protein is through brain scanning or bone marrow puncture.

A new study on the blood test showed it was 96 percent effective in predicting whether a patient would develop Alzheimer’s.

This study was done with a test that is currently only available to researchers.

Its manufacturer, ALZ-path, says that if it becomes accessible to the public, it would cost between $200 and $500.
