Madrid, Spain.- The United States Ministry of Justice announced this Monday that last Tuesday it arrested a Chinese agent who covertly provided Beijing with information on dissidents, residents and pro-Taiwanese organizations in Boston.

“This case demonstrates, once again, how far the Chinese government, including its Ministry of Public Security, can go to attack people in the United States who exercise their right to speak against China,” the aide said in a statement. Attorney General Matthew Olsen.

Litang Liang, 63, was arrested last Tuesday and has been charged with acting, between 2018 and 2022, as an “undeclared agent of the People’s Republic of China”, a charge that carries a sentence of up to ten years in prison, three years of probation and a fine of up to 250,000 dollars (229,976 euros).

The US Ministry of Justice has specified that the man supplied information, videos and photographs about Boston residents, as well as pro-Taiwanese organizations and Chinese dissidents in the city, to Chinese government officials.

“The Department of Justice will protect individual rights and our country against those who seek to act unlawfully on behalf of foreign governments within our borders,” said US Attorney Rachael Rollins of the District of Massachusetts.
