More than two-thirds of those surveyed (68 percent) see it as critical for German-Turkish relations if Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wins the presidential election next Sunday. This view, expressed in the current DeutschlandTrend for the ARD morning show, is widespread in all sections of the population and among supporters of all parties. Only a minority (9 percent) believe that Erdogan’s confirmation in office would be good for relations between the two countries. Almost one in four Germans (23 percent) cannot or does not want to commit themselves to this question.

Germans take a rather critical view of artificial intelligence

Many citizens are uneasy about the fact that artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly intervening in the world of work and everyday life. 46 percent of those surveyed consider this technology to be more of a risk for themselves, and 39 percent are convinced of the opportunities offered by AI technology. Almost every seventh German citizen (15 percent) is currently unable to make a definitive statement about the advantages and disadvantages of AI. On the other hand, it is mainly the younger and more educated respondents who are open to this new technology. Citizens up to the age of 34 (57 percent) and those with a university entrance qualification (54 percent) are more likely to see the future prospects of AI.

Sunday question: Union loses, FDP with the best result in months

There are some changes in party preferences in the current DeutschlandTrend in the ARD morning magazine. If there were federal elections next Sunday, the Union would lose two percentage points compared to the previous week and would record its weakest value since the beginning of February, but would remain the clearly strongest parliamentary group at 28 percent. The SPD is recovering, could improve by one percentage point and would therefore come to 18 percent. Bündnis90/Die Grünen would keep their result, as would the AfD. Both parties would come to 16 percent. The FDP could improve its result by one percentage point and now reach 8 percent, the best value since September 2022. The left would confirm the previous week’s share of the vote with 5 percent and would be represented again in the Bundestag.

study information

The ARD-DeutschlandTrend is a random-based telephone and online survey by Infratest dimap on behalf of the ARD morning magazine. A total of 1,220 eligible voters in Germany were surveyed from May 9 to 10, 2023 (716 telephone interviews and 504 online interviews). Missing values of 100 percent mean: don’t know / no answer.

The margin of error is 2 (at a share value of 10 percent) to 3 (at a share value of 50 percent) percentage points.

The questions in full:

  1. The presidential elections will take place in Turkey on Sunday. Assuming that the outgoing President Erdogan wins the election again: would that be good or bad for relations between Germany and Turkey?
  2. Recently, the topic of “artificial intelligence” has been discussed a lot. Do you personally see artificial intelligence more as an opportunity or more as a risk?
  3. Which party would you vote for if there were a general election next Sunday?
