A big step in terms of digitization has been taken: the care documentation, which was previously handwritten, is now paperless.

Dornbirn. The start took place in a ward for internal medicine, a so-called pilot ward. By the end of March, all wards with beds will keep the nursing part of the patient file electronically

“This digitization step means real-time documentation and brings enormous benefits to everyone involved. On the one hand, the digital patient file provides immense security in patient care due to the legibility of the relevant information, while at the same time it makes things much easier for employees and simplifies processes. The advantages of the digital application are obvious: the data and information are legible, can be further processed, analyzed and compared and thus provide new insights. “Therefore, the digital patient record enables more quality and security for everyone involved,” emphasizes the nursing expert Jakob Koeb, Project leader of the care group.

He works in nursing development, together with an interdisciplinary project team, on the realization and implementation of digitization: “Success needs people. Those who think ahead and implement it. And now especially those who live it in everyday life. Such a large project cannot be implemented without the great commitment of the employees.” The A in the beginning stands for analogue. “It is a big challenge to collect the needs and wishes of the different professional groups and to bring them together in interaction with the technical possibilities and the electronic documentation that already exists in some cases into the best possible overall solution,” explains Helmut Schwendinger, who, as an IT employee, contributes his in-depth knowledge of the software used to the project and is already working on further developments together with the team.

From now on it will be digitally documented here.

From the practice for the practice

The high level of acceptance of the digital documentation is primarily due to the fact that employees are involved in the user-friendly software. “The employees in internal medicine agree that the new system will quickly establish itself in the house,” emphasizes the head of the nursing department for internal medicine, DGKP Jurgen Zengerle. He contributed his expertise on the nursing process to the electronic patient file and was deeply involved in the training of the employees. The first steps – the digital documentation of care – are followed in the next steps of digitization by the so-called “fever curve”. “The prescribing, preparing and administering of medication will also be completely changed and digitally displayed with the digitization of the patient curve,” explains Zengerle. This is a big first step towards the gradual digitization of processes in the healthcare sector. This digitization also increases data security. It can be traced at any time who has read or edited data.
