Before leaving for Germany, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki confirmed his intention to hold talks on supplying Leopard tanks to Ukraine during his visit to Berlin on Monday. According to the PAP news agency, he will speak to representatives of various parties at the Warsaw military airport.

He could not imagine that Berlin’s approval would not be granted quickly. It is important to end the hesitant action and focus on real support, said the Polish Prime Minister. Ukraine needs modern western tanks.

Morawiecki was supposed to take part in a celebratory matinee of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group on Monday. The occasion is an anniversary of Wolfgang Schäuble: he has been a member of the Bundestag for 50 years.

Last week, after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Lviv, Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said his country had already made the decision to provide the Ukrainians with Leopard main battle tanks for a company as part of a coalition with allied states.

According to a Polish military expert, that would probably be 14 main battle tanks.

After Poland’s advance, Finland also signaled that it wanted to hand over Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Great Britain announced on Saturday that it would provide Ukraine with 14 Challenger 2 main battle tanks.

Germany plays a key role in the debate because the Leopard tanks were developed in Germany. As a rule, the transfer of armaments from German production to third parties must be approved. Morawiecki also admitted this. (dpa)
