Sports writing, May 2 (EFE).- The Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic will play the US Open this year thanks to the decision of the US authorities to eliminate mandatory vaccination for foreigners.
Djokovic missed the tournament in 2022 due to his refusal to be vaccinated against covid-19, which prevented him from traveling to the United States.
On Monday, the US government announced that the mandatory vaccination requirement for foreigners arriving in the country will end on May 11.
The US Open takes place this year in New York from August 28 to September 10.
Earlier this year, the number 1 in the world rankings requested special permission to enter the United States and play the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments despite not being vaccinated against covid-19.
Finally, the Serbian tennis player could not compete in the two tournaments because he did not have a vaccination certificate.
In 2022, Djokovic was deported from Australia, where he had traveled to participate in the country’s open, for breaking the country’s vaccination regulations and after a brief court battle.
Djokovic traveled to Melbourne thanks to a medical exemption. But after his arrival in the country, the Australian authorities decided that the tennis player was not authorized to remain in the country.
