Popularly known as high blood pressure, high blood pressure affects about 38.1 million Brazilians aged 18 or over, according to a report released this year by the Ministry of Health. The number of adults diagnosed with the disease increased by 3.7% in 15 years in Brazil.

High blood pressure is considered one of the main risk factors for developing heart disease. It is also associated with the occurrence of stroke and chronic kidney disease, among other conditions.

According to the doctor and university professor Mauro Machado, there are several factors that contribute to the increase in cases of hypertension. Among them are sedentary lifestyle, overweight and obesity, age and alcohol intake, in addition to inadequate diet with high sodium consumption.

“Part of this aggravation is due to the excessive consumption of salt, which is present in most processed foods, in addition to being part of the daily preparation of meals. The recommended amount is 5 grams a day”, warns the doctor.

prevention is essential

As in the treatment of other pathologies, prevention is the best way to fight against the risks of hypertension.

Machado points out that, in case of high blood pressure diagnosis, the health professional will prescribe medicine and indicate health promotion measures, such as physical activity and balanced diet, to keep the numbers under control. The recommendations must be strictly followed.
