Dodgers star reveals his young son suffers from a rare syndrome

LOS ANGELES.- Freddie Freemanstar of the Los Angeles Dodgersand his wife Chelsea announced that their 3-year-old son Maximus suffers from Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder.

His updated social media post came Thursday, just under a week after the Dodgers removed him from the starting lineup against Houston. Freeman was placed on the family emergency absentee list a day later.

The player went home and has not returned to the team since.

In the post, the couple announced that Maximus’ health had “rapidly declined and he fell into total paralysis of the body,” so he was rushed to the hospital to “strengthen his lungs” last Friday.

Maximus has improved in recent days. He is now breathing without a tube and was taken off the ventilator on Wednesday.

“These days have been the hardest and scariest of our lives,” the post added. “Maximus is a very special boy and has fought VERY hard. There will be a long road to recovery, but we have faith that he will heal completely.”

The publication adds that the family appreciates the prayers, expressions of support and good wishes.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Guillain-Barré syndrome is a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. Although there is no cure, most people recover completely.

Freeman, an eight-time All-Star, is batting .288 with 16 homers and 67 RBIs.

Swiatek makes history for Poland

Iga Swiatek used a towel to wipe tears from her eyes at the Paris Olympics after winning the bronze medal as Poland’s first tennis title, beating Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2, 6-1 on Friday.

The match lasted just 59 minutes and Swiatek played much better than she did a day earlier in her straight-sets loss to China’s Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals. That result ended Swiatek’s 25-match unbeaten streak at Roland Garros, the clay court used for the French Open each year and for the 2024 Olympics.

After losing to Zheng on Thursday, Swiatek skipped questions from reporters in the mixed interview area. Blushing and red-eyed, Swiatek walked past the reporters, saying only: “Sorry. Next time.”
