Dog rescued from storm drain in Avocado Heights

With the help of firefighters, five hot dogs and some treats, a small dog was rescued after it fell into a storm drain in Avocado Heights on Friday.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the call around 3:48 p.m. in the 1500 block of Delamare Drive in Avocado Heights, a city near South El Monte and the City of Industry.

Firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department were able to get the pup out of the storm drain after a few hours.

The dog was eight to 10 feet down the narrow storm drain, according to Jason Mendoza of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, they removed the manhole cover and tried to lure it in with some food, Mendoza said.

Mendoza said that every time he tried to go down and grab the dog, or when they put a rope in the storm drain, the dog would get scared and run further into the tunnel.

It wasn’t until fire personnel went to another manhole and made noise to herd the dog toward the other opening where firefighters were waiting to pull him out.

“He was scared and aggressive, trying to bite everyone and everything,” said Denice Lopez of the LACoFD. “I think it was just fear and a little bit of anxiety.”

No collar was found on the dog and now firefighters are checking to see if he has a microchip. Animal control services were also called to the scene.
