According to a letter which NBC News learned, the team behind Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has formally requested that Meta, which owns Facebook, unlock his suspended Facebook account. The move is reportedly part of a planned return to the two major social media platforms ahead of the November 2024 US presidential election.

“We believe that the ban on President Trump’s Facebook account has dramatically inhibited public discourse,” the Trump campaign wrote in its letter to Meta on Tuesday, according to a copy reviewed by NBC News.

60,000 tweets

The then-president was banned from both Twitter and Facebook in the days after the Capitol storming, but was reinstated by new Twitter owner Elon Musk after a vote on the platform.

Trump’s often-controversial social media presence was widely seen as a key component behind the 2016 election win, with Twitter in particular a clear favorite platform – before he was banned, Trump had posted nearly 60,000 tweets.

“He’s been talking about it for weeks”

According to an anonymous Republican source told by NBC News, a Twitter comeback has been something Trump “has been talking about for weeks.”

Another source close to the ex-president also reportedly said that they had already begun planning the exact content of Trump’s comeback tweet.

When Trump plans to make his eventual return, and whether the ex-president will officially return to Twitter even if he continues to get the nod from Facebook, has not been communicated.

What is planned in the future for Trump’s own social media platform Truth Social is also unknown.
