The story of dragonball has evolved in a big way, especially with the Dragon Ball Super movies, which have gone on to take the world by storm, with feature films like Battle of Gods, Resurrection of F, Broly, and most recently Super Hero, not only providing fans with some of the best battles in the sequel series, but also taking place in the Shonen continuity.

That was not the case with most, if not all, of the movies. Dragon Ball Zwhich aren’t considered canon, but that hasn’t stopped current manga artist Toyotaro from revisiting the best friend of GohanIcarus, in a new art.

icarus first appeared in the third film of the Dragon Ball Z franchise, Tree of Might, in which he met Gohan and became fast friends thanks to the destruction caused by Turles, Goku’s doppelganger. The playful little dragon would often make appearances in future films as well as in the main series during the non-canon story arc that featured Garlic Jr.’s return in Dragon Ball Z.

However, Icarus hasn’t been found anywhere, most likely meaning its out-of-continuity status isn’t an ideal return at any point in the future of the anime series, though stranger things have certainly happened.

toyotaro shared the new art via the official Dragon Ball website, which not only brings back Gohan’s dragon, but also imagines Icarus growing up and towering over Goku’s son after his long absence from the Shonen series.

At present, it doesn’t seem like Icarus has the option to return in the Dragon Ball Super manga arc, as the print story currently focuses on Goten and Trunks as they try to follow in Gohan’s footsteps as the new superheroes on the block, as Saiyaman X1 and Saiyaman X2, giving little chance for his return.
