Bright sun, two helicopters with five-blade rotors, one with a winch, for inspection, the mission helicopter, the “World of Air Rescuers” exhibition, blue light mile – there was a lot on offer today at the open day at the Dortmund station of the DRF Luftrettung. Immediately after the start, long queues of enthusiastic visitors formed at the exhibited highlights. Roman Morka, Chief Technology Officer at DRF Luftrettung, explained the equipment of the anniversary helicopter together with the Dortmund crew. “The event here today was something very special for me,” he notes, “because I have roots in the region. I grew up not far from here in Iserlohn and know the airport. The station here is new to me, which I was allowed to visit for the first time, which made me very happy. Many thanks to the ward team for the warm welcome in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia.”

Anniversary Helicopter, Helicopter with Winch, “World of Air Rescuers”

The numerous visitors, including many families with children, were able to view the anniversary helicopter in a special livery and a state-of-the-art H145 with a rescue hoist. Crew members gave visitors a look inside and explained the helicopter’s medical and aeronautical equipment.

In addition, the “World of Air Rescuers” invited visitors to take a look behind the scenes of air rescue and to become active themselves. Varied exhibits to look at, touch and experience gave a first-hand insight into the most diverse areas of the DRF Luftrettung. Whether winch training with virtual reality glasses, a detailed miniature world or equipment from everyday flight – the mobile exhibition on 57 square meters offered something for everyone. In addition, Dortmund crew members were available to answer the numerous questions from the visitors about their everyday work.

Real commitment and friends as guests

The visitors were also able to experience real day-to-day operations when Christoph Dortmund was alerted to an emergency operation near Leer shortly after the opening of the event and started in front of everyone. Cell phones were pulled out for photos and many people said they had goosebumps at the sight of a real operation. But everyone agreed: It’s good that the air rescuers exist!

Thanks and good cooperation were also the focus of the numerous congratulations from the local partners. Whether professional or voluntary fire brigade, police, DLRG and Red Cross, everyone was there to congratulate the air rescuers. They say: It was nice to have so many friends over! Many thanks and we look forward to continued good cooperation!
