Now that the premium controller for the PlayStation 5 has been released, there are also the first videos of users taking a thorough look at the DualSense Edge from the inside. It is noticeable that the controller, which costs 240 euros, has a significantly smaller battery than the standard DualSense controller.

A third less battery – but more functions

In itself, that’s no surprise, since Sony had already admitted (thanks, The Verge) that the Pro-Controller would have a “slightly shorter” operating time compared to the normal DualSense. The reason for this is the many new functions that are built into the controller – despite the same form factor and design.

The balance between wireless uptime and “rugged, powerful features” was particularly important to the company. Still, the DualSense Edge’s 1050mAh battery only manages a tiny bit above the 1000mAh DualShock 4 controller. In comparison, the standard DualSense lasts significantly longer with its 1,560 mAh battery.

That shows the hour Video by Streamer Budds_Controllers, who completely disassembles the DualSense Edge. In a tweet he compares the two batteries of the DualSense siblings.

In theory, a smaller battery could keep up with a larger one through efficient use of energy. With the many new functions of the DualSense Edge, which require even more energy, this shouldn’t matter.

Apparently, Sony had little choice, because the new buttons and functions as well as the associated hardware also take up space in the case. A compromise seems to have been making the battery smaller. You can access our test of the DualSense Edge here.
