High temperatures persist and the city went on alert. From the Municipality of La Plata they reported that in the next 48 to 72 hours there will be high temperatures in La Plata, “which will negatively affect the feeling of comfort”, which is why the Risk Attention Level was raised to yellow, as reported by the Municipality of La Plata.

For several consecutive days that temperatures exceed 30 degrees. Precipitation is expected for Wednesday of this week, but before that there will be two days with temperatures that will be around 32 and 33 degrees maximum.

Summer is at its peak and the city moves at a different pace, mainly on weekends. Yesterday, groups of friends and families came out to occupy public spaces, swimming pools and places of recreation to combat the intense heat.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND WARNINGS

In this context of intense heat, the College of Nutritionists proposed different measures to combat high temperatures and avoid complex conditions.

“Although it is important to stay hydrated throughout the year, in this time of high temperatures it is essential to consume water to avoid dehydration,” it was mentioned.

“When we talk about hydration, we talk about drinking water and not about another drink,” said Victoria Núñez, a graduate in Nutrition (MN 10495), enrolled in the College of Nutritionists of the Province of Buenos Aires. In this sense, she pointed out that water “is vital for the proper functioning of various body systems, especially the kidney, which has an impact on others.”

Staying hydrated is essential for the body to function optimally.

A greater consumption of water favors the circulation of substances through the blood, improves cell regulation and helps the kidneys work properly. There are three specific characteristics that help to see the hydration through the urine: the color, which should not be very dark, except in the morning; the smell, which can have it but not very strong; and if it has foam or not, warn if it has a quantity. Consequently, if a person does not drink water, the body manifests it through fluid retention or edema.

“To ingest more water, I recommend always having a bottle at hand and from there keeping a record of how much is consumed. On hot days, drink even more and don’t wait until you’re thirsty, as that’s a late sign of dehydration,” warned Núñez. The bottle must be properly sanitized and it is recommended that it only be used to drink water and not change the number of liquids. Glass bottles are the best since they can be sterilized avoiding the possibility of developing or triggering foodborne diseases very common with high temperatures.

Likewise, the nutritionist also suggested: “There are applications that are downloaded to cell phones that work as a reminder to drink water.”

Érica Bianquet, a graduate in Nutrition (MP 1282) and Núñez’s colleague at the Buenos Aires College of Nutritionists, clarified that “water can be found in different proportions in some foods such as fruits and vegetables”, however this in no way replaces the requirement of liquid consumption, always prioritizing the consumption of safe water.

VULNERABLE

The elderly, pregnant women and young children are the groups most vulnerable to dehydration since the alarm signal of thirst is diminished in them. “A bottle near the resting places of the elderly can be useful when they can gauge how much water they drink in a day,” explained Bianquet, and for boys and girls, it is essential to give them “a clear and concrete message about the importance of water in your body”.

Among the measures to adopt are listed: drink safe water frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty; moderate the consumption of caffeinated or alcoholic beverages; moderate physical activity; eat light meals that help replace the salts lost through sweat (salads, fruits, vegetables and juices, among others).

Doctor

From the College of Nutritionists of the province of Buenos Aires, it was suggested to consult a doctor in the event of symptoms that last more than an hour and that may be related to high temperatures in a context of yellow alert due to heat.
