We report live from Duisburg:

John Reed in Duisburg: Large-scale police operation with a special task force

9.45 p.m.: Now comes the official confirmation: “At least one perpetrator is on the run, he is being intensively searched for,” says police spokesman Jonas Tepe.

8:25 p.m.: What caused speculation among observers and residents on Tuesday evening: On the night of Easter Monday, a 35-year-old was killed in the old town with numerous knife wounds not far from today’s crime scene. Is the attack a few days later related to this bloody deed?

The Kripo can not yet show any investigative successes. The victim had celebrated with several acquaintances in a house on Beginengasse. Alcohol was also drunk. As the hour progressed, the party moved outside. What happened next is still unclear. At around 1:15 a.m., the 35-year-old was found covered in blood on Klosterstraße. His body had numerous stab wounds and lacerations.

Unconfirmed information: Attack with knife and machete

8:15 p.m.: According to information from our editorial team, three people were injured in the attack in the John Reed Studio, one of them seriously. Accordingly, the attack was carried out with a knife and a machete. The police have not yet confirmed this research.

Police spokesman Tepe reports that the first emergency calls were received at the control center at around 5:40 p.m. The callers reported that a man had assaulted several visitors to the studio.

Apparently, the emergency services on Schwanenstrasse no longer assume that the attacker is in the sports studio or in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene: investigators from the Kripo question employees of the studio and also enter the rooms again.

Police deny media reports of shooting

7.45 p.m.: It is still unclear whether the perpetrator(s) is/are on the run. Police spokesman Jonas Tepe, however, denies media reports that the police assume an act of amok. The police helicopter continues to make its rounds over the old and inner city.

7:31 p.m.: More emergency services are still being added. According to police spokesman Tepe, several of the injured were taken to hospitals.

The emergency services took visitors to the gym to the Brazilian restaurant Rodizio on Schwanenstrasse, across from the John Reed branch. Acquaintances and relatives of these eyewitnesses are also waiting among the onlookers, for example in the parking lot at Duisburg City Hall. An emergency chaplain is now on site.

7:26 p.m.: Jonas Tepe, police spokesman for the Duisburg headquarters, is now making initial statements about the “very dynamic situation”: He confirms an “attack in the sports studio with several injuries”. He does not provide any information about the nature of the attack and the severity of the injuries. When asked, he says he has no knowledge of a dead person. It is unclear whether one perpetrator is responsible or whether several perpetrators were involved. The speaker can also say nothing about whether a perpetrator is on the run.

The Essen police have taken over operations management

7.15 p.m.: We still don’t know what happened here – apparently right in the John Reed fitness studio on Schwanenstrasse. The Duisburg police did not provide any further information, not even on how many people were injured. The Presidium in Essen has taken over the command of operations. It remains unclear for the time being whether the perpetrator is on the run.

19 o’clock: Schwanenstrasse and Münzstrasse are closed for large-scale operations. Numerous onlookers watch the emergency services at the barriers. Police spokesman Jonas Tepe calls on the population to avoid the old town.

Police officers comb the shopping streets. They seem to be looking for the perpetrator or perpetrators.

6.45 p.m.: There are four or five bangs in the John Reed Studio. It is unclear whether these were shots.

6.40 p.m.: Duisburg has not seen such a large police presence for a long time. There are around 20 police emergency vehicles on Schwanenstrasse by the town hall alone. A mobile task force (MEK) and a special task force (SEK) also rushed to the old town. A police helicopter is circling overhead. Most police officers wear protective vests.
