The background to this are new conditions that the US authorities apply to state subsidies. The basic promotion of electric cars in the amount of up to 7500 dollars will remain in place in order to advance the electrification of traffic. However, grants are only given to vehicles that were also largely produced in the USA, according to a news agency report DPA emerges.
According to the regulations of the Ministry of Finance and the tax authority IRS that apply from today, the eligibility depends, for example, on whether essential parts of the battery and also the raw materials come either directly from the USA or from specified trading partners. In particular, this should ensure that the dependence on China for batteries, which are important for the conversion to a green-tech economy, is reduced.
Only ten models qualified
Depending on the model, some of which are also produced in plants in the USA and with the involvement of local suppliers, the funding does not depend on the brand itself, but on the specific vehicle in question. The US national subsidiary of Volkswagen assumes that the ID.4 sold on the US market will continue to be available at a premium. However, the corresponding blessing of the authorities does not yet exist because some documents from a supplier, with which the origin of certain components is documented, are still missing.
In addition to German, many other international car brands are also affected. Only ten models would currently qualify for full funding. these all come from the major US brands of General Motors, Ford, Stellantis and, of course, Tesla.
