earphones "gift" in the mailbox? They may have spy malware

MADRID— Arriving home, seeing that there is a package of something that has not been bought in the mailbox and discovering that it is a Smart watch or of some headphones that someone has sent out for free as a promotion, is not as ideal as it may seem.

A campaign to send promotional products free of charge has alerted the authorities in the United States, since they see in these supposed gifts a way of entry for the ‘malware‘ for home data theft.

This has been alerted by the Department of the Criminal Investigation Division of the United States Army, which has detected the sending of these unsolicited packages by postal mail to members of the military service.

This Department advises in a statement not to turn on the received device, as it may contain ‘malware’ that, when connected to the WiFi and with the ‘smartphone’, accesses the user’s information to steal it. It can also gain access without the user’s permission to sensitive items such as the camera or microphone, in order to spy on them.

This campaign is similar to another known as ‘Brushing’, in which a seller on an ‘eCommerce’ platform such as Amazon buys their own products through fake buyer accounts, while the products are shipped to a real address.

The seller then writes a positive review about their item from the fake buyer’s account, but under the ‘verified purchase’ mark. With this technique, you can boost your rankings.
