It was recently learned that an agreement between the Mayor’s Office of Cartagena, the Ministry of Culture and the National Unit for Risk Management, led to the signing of a start act to carry out the consultancy that It will indicate the way to restore the public space.

The mayor of Cartagena, William Dau, clarified that it will be the experts who indicate the step to follow. The local president left in doubt whether the Aquarela building will be demolished, as has been said for a long time.

“It must be clarified that it is not about demolition but to see how public space can be restored, which must be done by police order. The demolition will have to be the object of this consultancy”, said Dau, quoted by the radio station RCN Radio.

Likewise, he indicated that he hopes that before the end of his term of government there will be positive news on this issue.

“They will have three months to review how this public space will be returned and I hope that before the end of my term there will be news about Aquarela,” added the mayor of Cartagena.

It is noteworthy that the contract, which had already been awarded since October last year, has an approximate value of 241 million pesos and, as mentioned, the execution period is three months.

Along the same lines, the supervision of the consultancy will be in charge of the Consorcio Interventoría Estudios Técnicos de Aquarela. This, for its part, has a cost close to 77 million pesos.

Within the framework of this controversy, in which the main concern was that Cartagena would lose the quality of a World Heritage Site, the director of Heritage and Memory of the Ministry of Culture, Marcela Cuellar, gave a report of tranquility.

The official assured that this step is very important and will undoubtedly represent a great weight in the next report to be issued to Unesco on the case of the Aquarela building. Cuellar indicated that with this, Unesco will be able to verify that in Colombia “we are working for the conservation of our tangible and intangible heritage.”

“What happened today is very important because for our next report we will be able to account not only for the signing of this agreement and this study, but also for the results that will be in April and we hope that they will be excellent results for everyone,” Marcela said. Cuellar.

Likewise, he stressed that “Aquarela set off the alarms for all of us, and we are waiting to be able to understand our landscape as a whole again without these interruptions.”

For his part, the deputy director of Risks of the Ungrd, Jaime Matíz, was specific in saying that it is expected that in three months the results of this study will allow once and for all to solve this issue.

“We hope in three months to have results regarding the diagnosis, the definition of alternatives for the restitution of public space,” said the official quoted by the Blu Radio station.
