We watched series, we watched movies, but we also played video games in 2022. These are the titles that have marked us the most this year. Curiosities like Vampire Survivors and Rollerdrome and the obvious, like Elden Ring or God of War: Ragnarök.

It’s the end of the year and it’s an opportunity to take stock of the video games of the year. Our favorites, which are not necessarily the titles that have reaped the most awards, but which have touched us. Waiting for the heavyweights of 2023 (like Diablo IV, Final Fantasy XVI, Star Wars, Harry Potter), these are the titles that we believe deserve your attention.

vampire survivorsfor Julian

Could the best game of the year 2022 – in my opinion – have been discovered on December 22 during a conversation with a colleague? Absolutely. As I was gone to hold back Dragonflightthe latest extension of World of WarcraftMaxime told me about vampire survivors. Somewhat cautious, I first downloaded the mobile version, which was free, before buying the game on PC.

And what a divine surprise! The game, with its very retro look, which evokes console video games during the 90s, all in pixel art and limited animations, is very addictive. The goal of the game is simple: survive waves of increasingly powerful enemies that keep converging on you. But, fortunately, you will have access to ever more powerful weapons.

There isn’t really a story in vampire survivors. We don’t care much about the characters we play (except for their combat skills). What we want above all is to withstand the shock, recover all kinds of items, have good combos and destroy hordes of monsters by the hundreds and thousands. Everything is basic, but simplicity is certainly not a disadvantage for a video game. Anyway, not with vampire survivorswhich keeps us coming back again and again.

Horizon Forbidden Westfor Marcus

Horizon Forbidden West was a huge slap on PS5. Both in terms of the sublime graphic quality and the rich and refined artistic direction, this is for me the most beautiful game to date. The gameplay, although still perfectible (we would like to be able to parry), makes the action sequences hectic. The scenario is certainly less surprising than in Zero Dawn, but finding Aloy and her unique post-apo universe was a great pleasure. A nugget from every point of view.

Elden Ringfor Maxim

I’ve played way too many video games this year. In itself, to choose Elden Ring belongs to a form of evidence. But there are far too established evidences to escape it. It’s simple: of my 600 hours of play in 2022, more than 10% were devoted to Elden Ring. I was already a customer before the same release, because of my love for the FromSoftware studio. But I never imagined developers being so capable of reinventing themselves. Elden Ringwhich transposes the formula of Dark Souls in an open world where freedom is total, is a fascinating experience. I’ve discovered some excellent video games in recent months, but none display such great mastery in a yet complex genre. In short, play Elden Ring.

God of War: Ragnarokfor Nicholas

Is the sequel to a masterpiece doomed to be a disappointment? Only three years after the first installment of the Nordic adventures of Kratos and Atreus on PS4, a game considered one of the most successful of the modern era, god of war made its return in November 2022.

If he’s not reinventing the wheel (the gameplay is basically the same, but a few good finds help him diversify), God of War: Ragnarok is as exciting as its predecessor. The script is brilliant, the characters are endearing, the fights are daunting, the universe is magnificent, the graphics and the production are impressive… The generosity of this game has no equal, except for the title released in 2019 A magic trick from Santa Monica Studio, which proves to us that you can make two masterpieces in a row without keeping fans waiting a decade. God of War: Ragnarok is the game every PS4 or PS5 owner should play, even if they think the universe isn’t for them. We promise, we can only adore it.

Rollerdrome, for Thomas

On the one hand, rollerdrome is a third-person shooter inspired by Max Payne in which it will be necessary to get rid of all the enemies present on a skate park with great reinforcements of slow-motion. On the other hand, it’s a roller-skating game, heavily inspired by titles like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, in which we chain grinds, tricks and aerial pirouettes to recover ammunition. If this mixture may surprise at first glance, controller in hand rollerdrome quickly becomes obvious. The pleasure of the game is undeniable and you quickly get carried away by scoring desires. It’s a nervous, fast and incredibly enjoyable game, which I didn’t expect to like, but which finally totally conquered me!
