The opposition parties to Turkish President Erdogan have united to present a candidate for the presidential election, who is currently given the favourite.
“That’s all I think about, I live with it from morning to night, we all believe in it a bit for the first time, we only talk about that, we really want a change 20 years later because we no longer have confidence in the institutions, we obviously want that to change”launches on franceinfo Sedef Ecer, playwright, screenwriter, director and Turkish writer living in France before the presidential election on May 14.
This is the first time that Turkey has seen a united opposition, made up of six parties, present a single candidate: Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, facing Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in difficulty in the polls. His challenger is given favorite. A situation that still surprises Sedef Ecer, because “there is this electorate of Erdogan which represents a very strong base and whatever he does”this electorate “not moving”more “there is a whole part of the population who was fed up”. And then there is “this earthquake which showed the limits of this government which was incapable of providing relief” to the victims.
Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, a soothing and unifying personality
“At first, I thought Kemal Kiliçdaroglu didn’t have the charisma of a strong man”compared to Recep Tayyip Erdogan recognizes the playwright, “but little by little we saw that it had become his strong point” thanks to “his honesty, his way of appeasing, of uniting”. According to Sedef Ecer, the opposition candidate “has a speech that soothes in the face of a speech that demonizes everyone” which evokes “enemies within and without”. “The fact that he does not appear as the strong man, the man who decides on his own turns out to be an advantage”she rejoices.
For Sedef Ecer, “fear is contagious but courage is also contagious and suddenly, I saw many of my friends, artists and journalists, massively taking a stand on social networks”in favor of Kemal Kiliçdaroglu notwithstanding “this regime which is becoming more repressive”.
