Electoral authority ignores armed incidents in elections

MEXICO CITY – Mexicans go to the polls on a day in which for the first time they could elect a woman as president of the country.

The Mexican National Electoral Institute (INE) reported that the day for the presidential, legislative, regional and local elections is developing in an “orderly and incident-free manner.”

“Election day is developing in an orderly manner and without major incidents. The small setbacks that have arisen are being attended to in a timely and expeditious manner by the presidencies of the polling station boards, the 32 local councils and the 300 district councils of the INE throughout the country. country,” highlighted the president of the INE, Guadalupe Taddei.

Taddei downplayed incidents such as the burning of ballots in the state of Chiapas or the death of two people, the first fatal victim was a woman in a ballot box robbery in Puebla.

The shooting began when the police went to the scene after being alerted and began pursuing the criminals who had fled in a vehicle, the report added.

Eight alleged assailants were arrested by the authorities, who found the woman’s body in the area.

A second crime

Another person lost his life near an electoral post in the town of Coyomeapan, in an incident also linked to the theft of electoral documents, added the state government source.

The victim is apparently a member of the Green Party. The authorities are investigating reports that the incident occurred due to a confrontation between rival political movements.

Hours before the start of election day, a candidate for a municipal oversight body was murdered in the state of Michoacán (west), the local prosecutor’s office reported.

This is Israel Delgado, 35 years old and aspiring trustee (comptroller) of the town of Cuitzeo, who was attacked by gunfire on Saturday night near his home.

For the official, it is a historic process. “The small setbacks that have occurred are being attended to in a timely and expeditious manner,” she assured.

The latest INE report also states that 87.59 percent of the polling stations or tables have been established, that is, 149,059 throughout the country, above the figures for the 2018 and 2021 processes.
