Electric cars have become real computers on wheels, and operating systems have therefore gradually entered our vehicles. And like any good self-respecting OS, updates are frequent, especially at Google.
The new Android Auto update is here, but…
The new version of Google’s embedded operating system, Android Auto 8.7 is now official. Therefore, you can now download it without any problem on your mobile from the official Android application store, so that when you connect it to your car, it takes over.
Version 8.7 should be the last before Android Auto’s big overhaul, dubbed Coolwalk. A little over a year ago, Google announced that it was preparing to completely overhaul its OS – tests had even been offered to certain users. But there, the Mountain View firm seems to be a little behind and should only offer the new Android Auto design with the next update – so maybe!
In this article, we are going to present the main new features of this version 8.7 of Android Auto. And in conclusion, we will also tell you what the next Coolwalk interface has in store for us.
Android Auto 8.7: little new features here and there!
Once again, and as Google has become accustomed to with Android Auto updates, there are not too many external changes or new features visible to most users in this new version. And we say most, because little by little Google is starting to launch the Coolwalk interface. However, at the moment the new interface is still not active in all users, it seems that only certain smartphones – from the Samsung brand – are beginning to have access to this new interface.

But for everyone else, there are still no noticeable changes in Android Auto. Indeed, in most cases, changes are always made internally, at the operating system code level. These are small changes to the code to pave the way for future developments, which usually don’t happen all at once, but bit by bit. Keep in mind that this is a system for the car and they can’t risk implementing new features all of a sudden with bugs that could endanger drivers.
Android Auto Coolwalk: lots of new features coming soon!
As we explained to you in the introduction, the Coolwalk update should arrive very soon for all users. And like every new generation of an operating system, Coolwalk will have the right to a new home screen on which it will be possible to display the navigation, the multimedia player, the weather or even the calls and the messaging – all of this simultaneously. Android Auto’s next interface should also better adapt to different on-board touchscreensregardless of their dimensions (4/3, 16/9, etc.).

But that’s not all, Coolwalk will also offer support for calls from the WhatsApp application, or an improved task bar, allowing direct access to the 4 most used applications, with just one click. On the other hand, and even if some smartphones already have access to this interface, Android Auto Coolwalk should not arrive for everyone before next summer.
