If you look at some things in the field of technology, then sometimes you can’t ask yourself more than “Why?” as a question. There is probably a target group for everything, no matter how small it is.

The Travel Mug 2+ from Ember was presented at CES. The name suggests it: This thermal mug is not the first. Basically, the Ember Travel Mug is a type of thermal mug specially designed for use on the go. It has technology that allows the temperature of hot drinks such as coffee or tea to be kept constant over a longer period of time. The Ember Travel Mug connects to an app that allows you to set and monitor your desired temperature.

The new version has new gimmicks on board. Ember’s Travel Mug 2+ is connected to Apple’s “Where is?” network. Where-Is?, or “Find My,” is a service from Apple that makes it possible to locate lost or stolen devices such as iPhones, iPads, Macs, AirPods, AirTags, or certified third-party tags and devices. The service is based on a network of devices called “Find My Network”. This network consists of all devices that have the Find My service enabled and are in the vicinity of a lost device.

If you have the Find My service enabled on one device and you’re missing another device, you can use the Find My app or the iCloud website to locate it. If the missing device is close to another device connected to Find My Network, its location is determined using Bluetooth signals. This information is then transmitted to your device so that you can see where the missing device is located.

It is important to note that Find My Network only works if the missing device is (temporarily) close to another device that is connected to the network. For example, if the device is in a building or on an airplane where no other devices are connected to Find My Network, it will not be found. So if you lose the smart mug, you can track it down. In the Travel Mug 2+ there are still batteries that ensure the desired temperature and there is a touch display.

The Ember Travel Mug 2+ is scheduled for release in spring 2023 and will carry the same price tag as its predecessor. That was around $200. Well, nice to be able to fine-tune the temperature, but for the money you can get a nice thermos and attach an AirTag. But hey – there is a market for everything. To me, it’s a gimmick for its own sake.
