A man who is said to have shot his mother’s partner in Melk last night and then holed himself up in a house was arrested during the night. After the bloody deed, a large number of executives, including the special unit Cobra, were deployed. Shots are said to have been fired during the arrest, and according to initial information, no one was injured, spokesman Raimund Schwaigerlehner told APA. The State Criminal Police Office is investigating.

The bloody deed is said to have happened in the evening in a family home. Police were called just after 7 p.m. Due to the unclear situation, the helpers were initially unable to enter the building. Finally, according to Schwaigerlehner, officials from the Rapid Intervention Group (SIG) brought the seriously injured man out of the house and handed him over to the rescue workers. But any help came too late for the victim. The man succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

According to media reports, the suspect is said to have holed up in the attic of the house with a long gun. The area around the building was cordoned off over a large area.

The State Criminal Police Office of Lower Austria took up the crime scene work at night, said Schwaigerlehner. For the time being, he gave no information on the type of weapon and the motive. Further details on the suspect and the victim were not initially given.
