An initially unknown substance was steaming away in a frenzy. It smelled. The emergency services were on site in protective suits.

A steaming substance and an indefinable smell triggered a major fire brigade operation in Essen-Überruhr on Monday afternoon. Blue plumes came out of a barrel below a balcony on the Brukter slope.

Residents were asked to keep doors and windows closed while emergency services in protective suits took stock of the situation.

As it finally turned out, it was a two-component adhesive that had been touched by employees of a company, but only reacted about an hour and a half later.

The vessel was sealed and handed over to the owner after a check with a thermal imaging camera, said fire brigade spokesman Christoph Risse. Nobody was injured during the operation.
