Since this year, the Federal Police has been testing the use of so-called super recognizers, which have a special ability to recognize faces. A spokeswoman for the Federal Police Headquarters in Potsdam said the aim was to strengthen the competence of the units in the search, observation and reconnaissance. It is also about the evaluation of extensive image and video files.

Other application scenarios are major events such as football games or demonstrations. Super recognizers are particularly good at identifying people, even in large crowds or videos. A total of 7,820 federal police officers registered for the test procedure at the beginning of this year, the spokeswoman reported.

In cooperation with the University of Greenwich in London, 113 Super Recognizers were selected from all areas of the Federal Police and distributed across Germany. The spokeswoman explained that these officials were already using this ability as part-time jobs as part of their daily work in controls, patrols and investigations.

An initial evaluation of the successes of these missions should be available in the middle of next year. The cooperation with the University of Greenwich has just been extended by two more years to select further Super Recognizers in the Federal Police. (dpa)
