The almost 100-year-old Burgberg cable car in Bad Harzburg brings around 250,000 visitors to the Großer Burgberg every year. A major renovation is now pending. It should go back into service at Easter.
The traditional and almost 100-year-old Burgberg cable car in Bad Harzburg is due for a major overhaul in the coming weeks. Workers now removed one of the two gondolas from its suspension cable in order to overhaul the undercarriage later.
In addition, the drive motor, the brakes and the control of the Burgberg cable car from 1929 are to be renewed, as the operations manager Oliver Busch said. “We have never had such a large, extensive renovation or repair.”
The second gondola can get caught on the carrying cable. It had already been repaired in 2020. The major revision is also necessary because there are no longer any spare parts for many old components, said Busch. Some companies have been commissioned to procure completely new components. The cost of the work amounts to several hundred thousand euros. “We want to be back at the start at Easter. The sooner the better,” said Busch.
the Burgberg cable car has been bringing guests to the Großer Burgberg at an altitude of around 483 meters since 1929. The mountain offers a view of Bad Harzburg and the Harz foothills. Around 250,000 passengers would be transported each year, said Busch. A gondola can accommodate up to 18 guests. The cable car manages the 186 vertical meters in just over three minutes.
The new Harz Tower, which is being built in Torfhaus, is to be around 65 meters high. Like the Burgber cable car, it should open at Easter, according to the operators. However, the date is not absolutely certain. The opening of the Harzturm has often been postponed due to delivery problems with building materials. In addition to a glass, free-standing viewing platform, a 110 meter long slide is also to be part of the tower.
