The company Goalowner of social networks instagram Y Facebook, will prohibit advertisers from targeting teens based on their gender, allowing only age and location segments to be used. The social networking giant informed advertisers, the company’s main source of income, that since February they could only use age and location segments for ad campaigns targeting teenagers globally.

The firm further stated that previous activity of teens using Meta apps will not be used to determine which ads they seeas reported by the news agency AFP. On her blog, Meta opined that the changes come because teens “are not necessarily as ready as adults to make decisions about how their online data is used for advertising.”

The company, formerly known as Facebook, is facing mounting pressure and fines to curb its practice of serving highly targeted advertising to its users, a model that has netted billions of dollars in revenue each year.

The Silicon Valley giant was fined $413 million last week as part of a long-running legal dispute with the European Union over advertising. It should be remembered that both Google and Apple also faced investigations and fines by regulators for breaches of privacy laws through targeted advertising.
