Amazon reviews play a big role in purchasing decisions, most of us read them before placing an order. But there the trader fights again and again with bots and fakes – and this fight is not made easier by the use of AIs, on the contrary.

Artificial intelligences that can write impressively real and, above all, “human”-sounding texts based on just a few inputs are a fascinating development. Thanks to services such as Microsoft’s Bing and the integration of ChatGPT there, such AIs are now conveniently available to everyone.

For Amazon, however, this technology is becoming more and more of a problem. Because the mail order company is already making great efforts to delete fake reviews. However, this is becoming more and more difficult because these counterfeits, which are usually intended to “improve” a product by manipulating the reviews, make it more difficult to recognize them through the use of text AIs.

AI texts are adopted directly

How CNBC reported, such counterfeits appear more and more frequently in the product reviews. Because the creators of such fakes often don’t even bother to read or adapt the text spat out by the AI. Instead, the answers are taken over one to one or posted by a bot without any changes to the associated product. You can often tell this because these texts start like this: “As an AI language model…” This is a text fragment that is often spat out by ChatGPT, and where the bot makes it clear right at the beginning who is responsible for this answer .

Ultimately, this makes it particularly easy for Amazon to recognize that they are fakes, but there are undoubtedly many such texts in which there is no explicit reference to an AI. Microsoft says it is taking action: “We want Amazon customers to shop knowing that the reviews they see are authentic and trustworthy,” a spokesman told CNBC – but it certainly won’t be easy.
